FORT WORTH -- Walter Ray Thompson passed away peacefully Thursday evening, Sept. 5, 2013, nearing his 87th year. Service: 11 a.m. Monday at Southwood Baptist Church, 2633 Altamesa Blvd., the Rev. Dan Williford, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel Land Memorial Park. Visitation: Family and friends will gather from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Great Room at Robertson Mueller Harper. Mr. Thompson's family will host a reception at the church immediately following the cemetery service. Born in Mexia on Oct. 7, 1926, Walter Ray was the son of Joe and Pearl Scott Thompson. At an early age, the family moved to Electra where he was raised and graduated from high school. Walter Ray, "Poppy" to many, served his country in the U.S. Army. He retired as a boiler inspector for Home Insurance Co. before attending TCC and obtaining an associate's degree in heating and air conditioning. Walter Ray and his wife, Zonita, were members of Southwood Baptist Church. Mr. Thompson was a member of the Sons of Hermann and a former member of the Moose Lodge. Survivors: In addition to his wife of 41 years, Zonita Jo Easter Thompson, Walter Ray is survived by his children, Gloria and Richard Neider, Keith and Glenda Thompson and Vanesa and Kendall Winters; Poppy to Christy Cruz and her daughter, Courtney Olivo, and Jessica and Taylor Wren; and nieces and nephews and their families.
