NEWARK -- Melba Fay Stowe Cate died peacefully Sunday afternoon, July 1, 2012, surrounded by her loving family, during her 39th year, following a long, courageous battle with leukemia. Service: 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel at Lucas Funeral Home, 517 N. Sylvania Ave., with David Bennett officiating. Following the service, Melba will be laid to rest with her husband, Bill, in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: She will lie in state Thursday morning at the funeral home, where family and friends will gather 10 to 11 a.m. Bearers of her casket will be Ben Bennington, Cody Cate, Ryan Cate, Joe Don Kubes, Rusty Miller, Tommy O'Kelly and Heath Robertson. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to Christ Haven for Children, in her memory, is suggested. A native of Everman, Melba was born April 14, 1929, the daughter of Foy Edgar and Biddie Jewel Hunt Stowe. She retired from banking in 1990. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William E. "Bill" Cate, who died in 2006; and son-in-law, Gerald Rowland. Survivors: In addition to her daughter, Saretta Cate Rowland, Melba is survived by her sons and their wives, Ed and Cheryl and Gary and Betty Cate; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
