FORT WORTH -- Grant F. Begley, M.D., passed away Monday, June 6, 2016, the morning after his 98th birthday. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Thursday in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth, 1000 Penn St., where he was a member for 66 years, a longtime elder and adult Sunday school teacher. Family and friends will gather on the church's West Concourse immediately following the service. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to First Presbyterian Church, the Rotary Foundation or a charity of choice, in his memory. Born in the Appalachian region of Kentucky, Grant graduated from Berea College and Tulane Medical School before serving in the Army Medical Corps at the end of World War II. In 1950, Dr. Begley moved to Fort Worth and became a partner in the Urology Clinic. In 1976, he was chosen for the prestigious Gold Headed Cane Award by the Tarrant County Medical Society. An expert hunter, Grant achieved the "Grand Slam" of North American big horned sheep. He was a collegiate swimmer, championship handball player and avid sports fan. Grant was also a voracious reader, accomplished gardener, skilled woodworker and a lover of symphonic music. Always a good storyteller, he also delighted in reciting limericks. Grant was married to Helen, the mother of his children, before her death in 1979. In 1980, he married Joy Crowder Miller, his constant companion and traveling partner for 35 years. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Joy, Dr. Begley is survived by his and Helen's children, Susan and Gil Anderson, Philip Begley, Peggy and Ron Salfen, and Jan and Dennis Hudson; Joy's children, Gary Miller, Mike and Kitty Miller and Katherine and Jim Berend; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
