Fort Worth -- George Andrew York, Jr. passed away Saturday evening, April 24, 2021. Mr. York was 82. Born in Pittsburgh, Kansas, he graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence with degrees in aeronautical engineering and mathematics. George had a passion for flying, which led him to a commission in the United States Air Force. He flew F-4 fighter jets in Viet Nam, after which he accepted a position as a flight instructor in the Air National Guard in Springfield, Illinois. George retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. After moving to Fort Worth, he finished his career as an aeronautical engineer for Lockheed Martin, where his major contributions included designing the cockpit of the F-22. In addition to flying, George loved spending time with family and playing his Dixieland jazz clarinet. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Marjorie Patterson York, brother, James York and sisters, Mary Lou Roberts and Martha Carmichael. George is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lynne “Pandy” York; his children, George Andrew “Andy” York III and Liz Mahon, Jeffrey “Jeff” York, Linda Carlson and Keith, Amy Ruth and James, Jill Williams and Steve Sherwood, and Loren Soman; his grandchildren, Charlotte York, Ella York, Gus Carlson, Griffin Carlson, Jordan Williams, Kasey Williams; and many beloved nieces and nephews and their families. A service at the grave was held Saturday, May1, in Osawatomie Cemetery in Osawatomie, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to the ALS Association or the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, in his memory, are suggested.
