FORT WORTH -- Doris Ameda Hawthorne Thomasson, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Jan. 17, 2016. Mrs. Thomasson was 89 years old. Family and friends will gather from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Great Room at Robertson Mueller Harper. Doris will be laid to rest privately next to her husband, Jack, in Everman Cemetery. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to Animal Hope, 6708 S. Hulen St., Fort Worth, Texas 76133, in her memory, is suggested. That will make Doris and Jack very happy! Born in her parents' home in Provencal, La., on May 16, 1926, Doris was the daughter of Wil and Louise Roberts Hawthorne, the youngest of five children. She graduated from high school barely at age 16 and promptly joined her older brother, R.A., in Fort Worth. After obtaining a secretarial degree from Brantley-Draughon College, she worked for Globe Aircraft during World War II. The company selected her to represent them in the Miss Fort Worth War Girl contest. Doris met her husband, John W. "Jack" Thomasson, after he returned from service in the U.S. Navy. It was love at first sight; they married three months after their first date. Doris became executive secretary for Shaw Oil Co. in Fort Worth. The couple were blessed with the arrival of two children. However, tragedy struck on Dec. 10, 1958 when Jack died suddenly of a cerebral brain hemorrhage at the age of 36. Finding herself alone with two children to raise, Doris returned to work as a secretary for her husband's company, W.E. Davis Auto Supply, where she worked until 1973. She was hired as executive secretary to the chairman of the board of Tony Lama and finished her career working for Dr. Craig Dearden. The loves of her life were her children and grandchildren. Pleasures in life came from her family, pets, gardening, cooking dinner for family and special occasions, and bird watching. Doris grew up in a staunch Southern Baptist family. After Jack died, she believed that one of her primary purposes was in leading her children to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. Every Sunday the family attended First Baptist Church of Everman where Doris became a part-time secretary typing the Sunday bulletin. Her family wishes to thank Doris' caregiver, Blanca Estrada, and the wonderful people at Gentiva Hospice, especially, Earl and JoAnn, for their loving care. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Irma; and brothers, R.A. Hyman and Arthur. Survivors: In addition to her children, Patti and Steve Sikes and Johnny and Diane Thomasson, Doris was grandmother of Courtney Sikes Moore and her husband, Aaron, John Clayton Sikes and his wife, Lindsay, John W. Thomasson III and his wife, Kelly, and Mallory Thomasson; great-grandchildren, Sage and Finley Sikes, Stevie Moore, and Kaitlyn and Chloe Thomasson; as well as Jack's nieces, Shirley Smallwood and Linda Horne, and brother R.A.'s sons, Bob and Melvin Hawthorne, and their families.
