Dean Clarence Humann Sr. was born on June 6, 1935, to Clarence and Eileen Humann in rural Lancaster County, Nebraska. His early years were in Lincoln and with his beloved grandparents, John and Edith Miller, in Nebraska City, Nebraska. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in France.
After his military service, Dean worked for E&S Bootery in Nebraska City and raised his son, Dean Jr. In 1958, he used his GI Bill to attend Hastings College, where he majored in theology and sociology. During his time at Hastings, he met and married Edith Barlow in 1963. Their first summer together, Dean served as a student pastor in Mahaska, Narka, and Cuba, KS in the Little Blue River Parish of the Presbyterian Church.
Dean and Edith raised four children while moving through several states as he worked as a Division Sales Manager for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company in Des Moines, Iowa, Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, D.C. In later years, Dean’s enterprising spirit led him to own hardware stores in North and South Dakota and Wyoming. The family then moved to Seattle, Washington and later to Texas.
Dean’s strong work ethic was evident throughout his life, as he continued to work until the age of 85, retiring from Sewell Lexus Dealership in Fort Worth, Texas. He believed in staying active and enjoyed interacting with new people every day, always striving to outwork the next person and never giving up. His remarkable endurance was also displayed in his battle with cancer, which he overcame for over 16 years.
An avid artist, Dean specialized in charcoal drawings. His family and friends looked forward to his yearly hand-drawn Christmas cards, each a unique scene from many memories he cherished. Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday, during which he took great care in crafting the best turkey and dressing, often preparing a trial run the week before. He was also known for sending handwritten notes of encouragement to his children and grandchildren, with a special cartoon character or drawing, and always showing them how much he loved them. His family was his greatest joy.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Edith B. Humann, and their three children & spouses: daughter Polly (Humann) and John Niblock, daughter Amy (Humann) and Dan Hesselgesser, and son Nate and Larissa Humann. He leaves behind seven grandchildren whom he adored: Kristen, Garrett, Brandon, Hannah, Madeleine, Daniel, and Lillian. He is also survived by his dear sister Joan Fitzgerald, special cousins Hal & Dev Traver, and cherished nephews, nieces, and friends.
Dean was predeceased by his parents, his son Dean Humann, Jr., his twin sister Jean Yost, and his brother Jim Humann.
Dean’s life was a testament to faith, hard work, and love for family. He was a treasure on this earth and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
