CONSTANCE MAHAFFEY

FORT WORTH -- Constance Cassidy Mahaffey died peacefully Saturday afternoon, Aug. 11, 2012, during her 74th year. Per her wishes, services will be held privately by family and friends. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to NPR (National Public Radio), in her memory, is suggested. Born in Paris, France, on Jan. 23, 1938, Constance was the daughter of Henry Clarence and Marthea Stucklen Cassidy. When she was age 13, the family returned to the United States where she attended Friends Seminary in New York City. Constance attended Pembroke College in Brown University before receiving a BA in English literature from Roosevelt University. She received an MA, also in English literature, from the University of Illinois. Constance taught at the University of Kentucky. After retiring in 2000 from the University of Texas at Austin where she taught and worked in various departments, including linguistics, international studies and astronomy, she moved to Fort Worth to be closer to her family. Survivors: In addition to her daughter, Andrea Mahaffey Brim and her husband, Rick, Constance is survived by her grandchildren, Eric of Dallas, Travis of Houston and Lauren and Ryan of Fort Worth; cousins including, Susan Goodfellow and her husband, Bill of Salt Lake City, Utah; and many good friends including Keatha Falls and Daesene Willman of Austin and dear friend of 57 years, Kathrin Perutz of New York City.
