FORT WORTH -- Charles Pentecost Roden died peacefully Sunday morning, March 24, 2013, early in his 79th year. Memorial Service: A celebration of Charles' life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the W. Ray Watson Chapel at University Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Mark Woods will officiate with the Rev. Jerome B. Pillow, eulogist. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions for missions or youth programs at University Baptist Church, in his memory, is suggested. Born in Shreveport, La., on March 4, 1934, Charles grew up primarily in Shreveport where he graduated from Byrd High School. He dedicated his life in service to his Lord, graduated from Baylor University in 1956. In 1957, he moved to Fort Worth where he completed a B.Div. at Southwestern Theological Seminary in 1960. Charles retired in 1987 from the Southern Baptist Radio and Television Commission after serving in various capacities of programming, marketing and as interim president. Following retirement from the commission, he worked for ten years in sales and marketing at Cargill Associates. Charles was a member of University Baptist Church where served on many committees and was a deacon and Sunday school teacher until the present time. He was an avid reader of science fiction, history, science, Christian studies and other topics of intellectual challenge. Charles enjoyed many life-long friendships and was active in Kiwanis and other areas of Fort Worth community service. He was known for his quick wit, integrity and devotion to the Lord. Charles was affectionately called "Penn" from his childhood by his family and "Chuck" by his many friends. He was primary care-person to his mother and aunt in their elderly years. Since 1965, Penn was a regular yearly companion to his sister, Rosalind, and her family on many great vacations, from Disneyland to Hawaii. He had resided at the Broadway Plaza at Cityview since 2008 and considered it his home. His family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff at Broadway Plaza and New Century Hospice for the nursing and rehabilitation and professional care given. And a special thanks to Jerry and Ann Pillow, Ted Rhodes and the many members of University Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. Charles E. and Maggie May Pentecost Roden of Arcadia, La. Survivors: In addition to his sister, Rosalind Roden Johnson, Utah, Charles is survived by his nephews, Eric R. Johnson and Kirk A. Johnson, all of Ogden, Utah; cousins, Judge and Mrs. Robert Y. Butler and Margaret Ann Simpson of Arcadia, La., and Sharon P.
