CHARLES ALFRED NEWCOMER Jr.

Fort Worth, Texas - Dr. Charles A. Newcomer Jr., a devoted husband, father and grandfather and distinguished college educator, died Thursday, May 16, 2024. He was 91.

Dr. Newcomer was a professor emeritus of Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, where he taught psychology for 31 years, retiring in 1997. He was a fan of all LHU athletics and remembered his connection to Lock Haven even through the trials of Alzheimer's disease.

He was a proud graduate of Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pa., who earned his undergraduate degree in business at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa. Following service in the U.S. Army, Dr. Newcomer earned a master's degree and a doctorate of education in psychology at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa.

Dr. Newcomer taught at Elizabethtown (Pa.) High School and served as a teacher and assistant principal at Milton Hershey School before beginning his tenure at LHU.

He was proud of his children and loved spending time with his grandchildren, particularly on vacations at Holden Beach, N.C. He loved traveling and remembered fondly his time as an exchange professor at Trent Polytechnic in Nottingham, England.

Dr. Newcomer enjoyed cross country skiing, square dancing, crossword puzzles and a good cup of coffee with friends. He was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Lock Haven and United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lock Haven and, more recently, was a member of Genesis United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

He is survived by his cherished wife Natalie Newcomer; his son U.S. Army (retired) Col. John Newcomer of Conway, S.C; his daughter Jean Newcomer Coffman and son-in-law Steve Coffman of Fort Worth, Texas; his sister Judy Bower of Williamsport, Pa.; and grandchildren Vincent Newcomer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Ben (Maria) Coffman of Boulder, Colo., and Luke (Sarah) Coffman of Fort Worth, Texas.

A private family gathering will be held to celebrate the life of Dr. Newcomer.
