Mr. CHARLES KING DEMPSEY

FORT WORTH -- Charles King Dempsey passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 2014. Mr. Dempsey was 77 years old. Service: The family will celebrate his life privately. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to the Oklahoma Aids Care Fund, 6608 N. Western Ave. #219, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73116, 405-348-6600, in his memory, is suggested. Charles King Dempsey was born Dec. 23, 1936, the son of Charles Brandley and Mildred King Dempsey of El Reno, Okla. Known by many nicknames to include, but not limited to, "The King," "Flip," "007," "The Friendly Waxman" and "Sonny," he was an avid OU fan who always had the latest model station wagon to take to home games, painted crimson, of course. After spending his early childhood years in El Reno, his family moved to Oklahoma City where he later went to Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore for his sophomore and junior years in high school. He returned for his senior year to quarterback and captain the old Classen High School football team and graduated in 1955. He studied one year at the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and a football team walk-on. His love of football moved him to officiate and referee Oklahoma high school games throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In 1959, Charles married his bride, Mary Madalene Barker, from Bethany, Okla. Mary died in 1976. During the early 1960s, he took a sales representative job for Industrial Chemical Laboratories based out of Omaha, Neb., with his right-hand man, Randy Threadgill. Over the years, Charles went on to win numerous sales awards, No. 1 in a nationwide company, and thus becoming a "Super Salesman." In 1977, hard work paid off for Charles in the form of his being able to build a dream house with "character." Located on the northwest side of Oklahoma City, his swimming pool was one such character trait being fully tiled in all black, and because of such, was rumored to be a navigation point for incoming aircraft to Wiley Post Airport. His labor fruits also provided him a much-desired life of travel, including attending Wimbledon and French opens, numerous Elvis Presley concerts in Las Vegas and many Christmas holidays spent on the Acapulco Bay. He was also avid about old movies and thus could tell you the names of almost all the main actors or actresses (dead or alive) in virtually any American-made film. In his later years his children sometimes had to avoid the room when the TV was tuned into TCM for fear of having to listen to yet another history lesson on Hollywood. Go Flip!!! Beat Texas!!! The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Kelly and Stonegate Nursing Center for their excellent care. He was preceded in death by both his parents, wife and a daughter, Dayna Lynne Dempsey. Survivors: In addition to his daughter and son-in-law, Lezlie Dempsey Culver and Chris, Charles is survived by his granddaughter, Madalene Culver; and sons, Jett Philip Dempsey and Charles Mattson Dempsey.
