Mrs. BARBARA RAY GOODSTEIN RUBIN

FORT WORTH -- Barbara Ray Goodstein Rubin passed away Monday morning, Dec. 16, 2013, after a spirited battle with cancer. She was 81. Memorial service: 5 p.m. Thursday in the Barnett Sanctuary at Congregation Ahavath Sholom, 4050 S. Hulen Street. She will be laid to rest Wednesday morning in Heska Amuna Cemetery, Knoxville, Tenn. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions designated to the Sylvia Wolen's Daytimers Program at Beth-El Congregation, 4900 Briarhaven Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76109, in her memory, is suggested. Born on July 23, 1932, in Knoxville, Tenn., to Miriam and Jay Goodstein, Barbara graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor of science in business administration. She married Sherwin Rubin after the two met as camp counselors at Blue Star Summer Camp in North Carolina. They eventually settled in Fort Worth in 1956 where they raised three children. After a long career managing non-profit organizations (The Fort Worth Girls Club and The Dan Danciger Jewish Community Center, among others) Barbara eventually completed her M.B.A. at TCU. She went on to work for two decades at NESDA, as the director of the International Society of Certified Electronic Technicians. After "retiring" Barbara's long-term passion for service and social justice continued and she remained active throughout her community. She held a number of board and advisory positions in the Jewish community, was active in voter registration programs for new citizens, through the League of Women Voters, organized election workers as an election precinct chair and judge, and volunteered regularly at Bass Performance Hall and weekly for 13 years as an Airport Ambassador at DFW. While still "retired" she served as the interim director of the Jewish Federation of Fort Worth and Tarrant Country before finding her new, and last, endeavor as the founding director of the Sylvia Wolen's Daytimers, a program of Beth-El Congregation with support from the Jewish Federation. This position allowed her to fulfill her lifelong passion for entertaining, event planning, education and community building. She was an avid outdoorswoman: canoeing, skiing (water and snow), hiking, scuba diving, and camping throughout her life and an enthusiastic world traveler. Survivors: Barbara is survived by children, Janice Rubin and Charles Wiese of Houston, Nina Rubin of Fort Collins, Colo., and Paul and Jewel Rubin of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Kolby Vaughan of Fort Collins, Colo., Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jacob Wiese of Houston, and Joshua Rubin of Atlanta, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Finn Vaughan of Fort Collins, Colo.; sister, Marcia Menuskin of Chattanooga, Tenn.; long-term partner and companion, Larry Steckler of Fort Worth; former husband, Sherwin Rubin of Arlington; and an extensive and loving extended family and network of friends located all over the world.
