Mr. ARTHUR IRVING HOFSTEIN

FORT WORTH -- Arthur Irving Hofstein, a loving father and grandfather, died of natural causes late Monday evening, Dec. 30, 2013, during his 91st year. Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery with the Martin Hochster Jewish War Veterans Post 755 performing military honors and Rabbi Andrew Bloom and Cantor Shoshana Abrams, Congregation Ahavath Sholom, giving religious rites. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to the Jewish War Veterans of America or the American Leukemia Foundation, in his memory, is suggested. A veteran of World War II, Arthur was proud to be one of the "Greatest Generation" of Americans who put duty to their country above all else. His defining years formed during the war, serving as a high-speed radio operator and scout with the 10th Armored Division in Patton's 3rd Army. After landing in Normandy, Arthur fought on the front lines and behind enemy lines. He was one of those surrounded during the Battle of the Bulge, fought his way into Germany during the crossing of the Rhine, and ended the war in Garmisch, Germany, and stayed on as a member of the occupation force. Prior to the end of the war in the Pacific, he was reassigned to the 101st Airborne. While sailing for the Pacific and the invasion of Japan, the war ended. Arthur received numerous medals for his war efforts including the Silver Star and three Bronze Stars. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, a 33rd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies. In his later years, Arthur attended minyon on a regular basis at Congregation Ahavath Sholom, where he was a member. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Beverly Mehl Hofstein, who died in 1983. Survivors: In addition to his son, Michael Hofstein and his wife, Marian, Arthur is survived by his daughter, Dale Steinek; granddaughters, Sara Hofstein, Leah Beth West and Ben Tomanek; and four great-grandchildren.
