Mrs. ADELAIDE SMITH BURGHER

Fort Worth, Texas – Adelaide Smith Burgher passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 62. A Celebration of Her Life will be held at 3 pm on Friday, December 3, in the Chapel at Christ Chapel Bible Church, 3701 Birchman Avenue with a reception to follow in the church’s “Fellwoship Hall.” Born and raised in Houston, Adelaide was the daughter of Howard and Adelaide Smith. She graduated from The Kinkaid School of Houston where she was Valedictorian and elected class favorite, “Miss Falcon.” She received a bachelor’s degree in Special Education and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Texas at Austin. While at UT, she served as president of her sorority, KKG, and was a “Little Sister” of KA fraternity. In Fort Worth, she became a member of The Assembly. Sweet Adelaide brightened the room and lives of everyone who met her. She had a smile and unmistakable laugh that were so appealing and contagious. Extremely smart, Adelaide was often placed in the spotlight and leadership positions. However, she preferred to work behind the scenes and building relationships. Her friends were incredibly loyal, sticking by her side during her illness, going on walks, taking her to lunch and gathering to pray with her. A selfless life, Adelaide put the interests of her husband, children and friends before her own, but above all else, she treasured her relationship with God. A member of Christ Chapel since 1983, Adelaide loved her church and the close friends she built there. She led women’s Bible studies for many years and found deep joy and purpose in being an integral part of her church community. Adelaide loved dogs and always had one or two since the day she married her husband, Bedford. She enjoyed going on daily walks in the adjacent nature area with her dogs and weekly in the neighborhood with Mimi Stephens. She also loved her exercise classes, yoga and hiking in the mountains. She was preceded in death by her mother. In addition to her husband Bedford, Adelaide is survived by her children, Ford and his wife, Emma, Louise and her husband, Matt Matherne, and Frank and his wife, Hadley; her grandchildren, Lewis, Teddy, Archie, Addie Cate and Nancy Burgher of Fort Worth and Vincent, Isiah and Adelaide Matherne of Austin; her father, Howard F. Smith III of Houston; and sisters, Marion Wade and her husband, Neal III of Houston, and their children, Neal IV and Scott and their wives and six children, Elizabeth Snell also of Houston, and her children, Charlie and Adelaide and Ben Blanford; and her aunt, Louise Neuhaus. In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to Streams and Valleys, Christ Chapel Benevolence Fund or The Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County in her memory, is suggested.
